Smoke Trail
Smoke Trail_2012

We are based in Alderville First Nation in Ontario, Canada. Our group has been together approximately 30 years, and were initially called Rice Lake Singers. Smoke Trail is a family drum group and as our family grew, we decided to change to our family name; Smoke. We are primarily a Northern Traditional Powwow drum group. We are well known in and around the powwow circuit and have won various awards. As well, we have had the honour of being host drum, guest drum and invited drum for many events throughout eastern Canada. We have composed many of our own songs, each holding a special meaning. We perform and facilitate specific aboriginal song and dance to educate cultural awareness. We have had the opportunity to perform in many venues such as grassroots festivals, museums and schools. In addition, we have performed at the Toronto Rock Lacrosse Team's season opening, in concerts with Susan Aglukark, Shane Yellowbird, Michelle Wright, and Buffy Ste. Marie as well as her music video, No No Keshagesh.

Our vision is to preserve and restore aboriginal music and dance, as well as to increase awareness of our unique culture. We provide experiences in a contemporary style enhanced with historical perspectives.

A long red road

Smoke Trail: We are a Northern Traditional Powwow singing group. This album is filled with some of our favorite original Straight Songs. Which means that the songs do not have words in a native language but are sylabic sounds. These songs are old style...they speak back to another time and we wish to recognize our ancestors who are guiding us...

We always enjoy sharing our songs with and for the people. “A little bit of this and a little bit of that” was recorded live which was an exciting and new experience for us as singers. We continue to look forward to seeing all our powwow family, friends and singing brothers. We would like to dedicate this CD in memory of our loved ones who have passed to the spirit world and will always be remembered.
